Unsticking packaging’s waste problem with biodegradable adhesives

Sticky situations often require innovative solutions – and with the growing demand for eco-conscious packaging, one of the stickiest problems facing converters is adhesive itself.

Demand for packaging is growing, and with this growth comes the problem of managing packaging waste. Adhesives form a key part of this challenge, and biodegradable hot melt adhesives like Tecbond 214B and Tecbond 110B-PR are leading the way towards overcoming it.

How is sustainability reshaping the packaging industry?

It’s no secret that in the world of packaging, sustainability has fast become a business imperative. Brands and consumers alike expect converters to do more on the environment, pushing converters to innovate and adapt.

Fibre-based packaging has emerged as a shining example of this shift and offers significant environmental benefits in terms of renewability, ease of recycling, and lower Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees. By 2034, the global packaging industry will be worth almost $1.8 trillion, with fibre-based packaging making up the largest proportion of this.  Almost 40% of total packaging material consumption was fibre-based in 2023 – a figure set to climb steadily in the year ahead.

Why are biodegradable adhesives a game-changer?

The surge in fibre-based packaging production means more waste to manage post-use. Sustainable design must account for every detail of this packaging, including adhesives.

Conventional adhesives can complicate recycling processes by requiring separation, which adds extra layers to waste management. Worse still, in the unfortunate situation that packaging escapes recycling streams and decomposes in the environment, traditional adhesives can release microplastics and harmful substances into the surrounding area.

Biodegradable adhesives like Tecbond 214B and Tecbond 110B-PR offer a transformative solution. These formulations break down completely under common natural conditions, leaving behind only water, carbon dioxide, and organic matter that microorganisms can digest. This lowers microplastic pollution in landfills or waterways while reducing overall environmental impact.

The added advantages of biodegradable adhesives

Switching to biodegradable hot melt adhesives doesn’t just benefit the planet – it also offers tangible benefits:

Enhanced brand appeal: As consumers increasingly prioritise eco-conscious products, biodegradable formulations can help converters meet their demands by increasing appeal and potentially cementing brand loyalty.

High performance: Biodegradable Tecbond products provide fast setting times and the same bond strength as conventional hot melt formulations.

Versatility: Tecbond 214B is compatible with a wide range of paper and board substrates, making it ideal for multiple closing and sealing applications.

Process efficiency: Tecbond 110B-PR is designed for low viscosity so it can run through narrow nozzles even when applied at lower temperatures. This enables converters to minimise energy used for sealing and closing, reducing their costs and carbon footprint.

Step towards sustainability with Power Adhesives

Adopting biodegradable adhesives is more than an eco-conscious choice – it’s a leap towards a more competitive future for the packaging sector. With products like Tecbond 214B and Tecbond 110B-PR, converters can align their designs with recycling infrastructure while eliminating harmful consumable waste.

Solid vs Solvent-based adhesives – The Vactac advantage for composite manufacturing

For years, solvent-based spray adhesive technology has helped composite manufacturers with positioning reinforcement layers during vacuum infusion. However, with the safety, performance, and environmental drawbacks of spray adhesives becoming increasingly clear, Power Adhesives’ Vactac range provides a cutting-edge alternative that is already transforming the industry.

Drawbacks of solvent-based spray adhesives

Although aerosol adhesives are widely used, their downsides are becoming more and more apparent.

As composite manufacturers grapple with challenges relating to waste and efficiency, aerosol adhesives may be holding them back. A large portion aerosol cans comprise of propellant and solvent, with only 20-30% of products typically being actual adhesive material. This means that only a small amount of the product is being used for its intended purpose, resulting in significant waste and inefficiency.

Solvent-based adhesives also present a risk to health and safety. Traditional aerosol spray adhesives contain potentially hazardous solvents, propellants, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as face masks or air extraction systems, to ensure a safe working environment. This not only adds to operational costs but also complicates the manufacturing process.

What’s more, aerosol adhesives may lead to performance issues with the materials they’re applied to. Used incorrectly, these aerosols can dissolve in polyester and vinylester resin, which creates a mixture of resin/adhesive (SBR/solvent based rubber) which can migrate from where it is applied, accumulate, and cause a dry spot. This accumulation of the dissolved SBR material will inhibit resin flow, leading to compromised structural integrity which can result in delamination.

The Vactac difference

Vactac represents a paradigm shift for vacuum-infused composites. This innovative product is 100% adhesive and offers high performance that directly addresses common challenges encountered with other technologies:

  • Cost effectiveness: Vactac means manufacturers essentially pay for pure adhesive – not solvents or propellants.
  • Environmental benefits: Vactac’s VOC and solvent-free formulation perfectly aligns with sustainability targets, helping companies eliminate aerosol emissions.
  • Enhanced safety: Unlike aerosol-based products Vactac is non-hazardous, removing the need for ventilation and additional PPE to create a safer working environment.
  • Uniform and controlled application: Vactac’s unique chemistry leads to improved inter-laminar shear properties and greater composite mechanical performance when compared to aerosol technologies.
  • High instant tack: This adhesive ensures precise positioning without shifting, leading to high-quality results.

Application technology

Alongside the Vactac adhesive system, Power Adhesives has invested in creating a better application process. The company’s new PCB-controlled dispensing system ensures a finer, more uniform adhesive pattern, enhancing interlaminar shear properties and overall mechanical performance when compared to aerosol technologies.

The equipment features internal modifications and improved nozzle and valve designs, resulting in more consistent output and lower maintenance requirements. It can be tailored for both low and high output applications, increasing versatility across different manufacturing scenarios, and is developed for lower production variability. As a result, Vactac’s application technology offers a more practical and cost-effective choice for manufacturers.

Innovative positioning adhesive system

Vactac is designed to support industries from constructing renewable energy devices to marine craft manufacturing in creating bonds with improved safety, environmental benefits, and adhesive performance. For professionals in the composites industry, Vactac represents the superior choice for positioning adhesives, standing out as the ideal solution for applications requiring stronger, more sustainable adhesives.

People of Power Adhesives – Brad Groves

As we celebrate 50 Years of Innovation at Power Adhesives, we are sitting down and talking with some of our brilliant team as part of our People of Power Adhesives Series.

First up is Brad Groves, Adhesive Production Manager. Brad is in his 15th year with us here at Power Adhesives and during our chat we discuss his career to date, key stand out innovation moments and his vision for the future at Power Adhesives.

Brad Groves – Adhesive Production Manager

How did your journey with Power Adhesives begin?

My journey with Power Adhesives started back in 2010. I joined as a Production Controller, working between the Adhesives and Applicators teams. My role involved managing works orders and offering assistance where needed. Over time, I developed a keen interest in the production of adhesives. I worked closely with the Technical team, the Lab, and the Production Manager to learn more about how the products were made. The deeper I got into the process, the more invested I became, and that’s where my real passion started.

What made you choose to stay with the company for so long?

It’s the people. The backbone of Power Adhesives is its people. From the start, I noticed that many of the staff were long-term veterans, which was reassuring for someone new like me. Over the years, I’ve built friendships that I know will last a lifetime. When you work alongside people you trust and respect, you almost become like a family. The opportunity to grow and learn from those around me made staying an easy decision.

How has your role evolved over the years?

My initial role was a bit of a hybrid, I was the go-to person between the Adhesives and Applicators teams, managing a mix of tasks like works orders, stock management, and label creation. But as my interest in adhesives deepened, I naturally gravitated toward that side of the business. I spent more time working closely with the lab and glue lines, which eventually led me to become a Production Supervisor.

In 2023, I stepped into the role of Adhesives Production Manager, overseeing one of the largest departments in the company. Now, I’m responsible for purchasing raw materials, managing production planning for six lines, and supervising a repack team. It’s a high-pressure role that keeps me on my toes, but I’m lucky to have a great team that understands what needs to be done and supports me along the way.

What’s one innovation or project you’re most proud of?

There have been many over the years, but one that stands out is our recent branding and labelling refresh. Early in my career, I was shown how to create labels using a mix of ERP, text files, and visual basic script. I became the go-to person for anything related to labels, so naturally, I was involved when it came time to explore new labelling options.

During a visit to a tech company to evaluate a label applicator, I noticed they had inkjet printers capable of printing in detailed colour. At the time, Power was using thermal transfusion, which only allowed for single-colour prints, limiting the quality and flexibility of our labels.

With Power undergoing a brand refresh, this discovery was perfectly timed. We invested in new printers and redesigned the labels to incorporate multiple colours, removing the need for non-recyclable inks from our cartons. This not only improved the overall branding but also boosted our EcoVadis score, a significant step forward in our sustainability journey. It was a lengthy project that took months to complete, but with the help of key colleagues, we pulled it off. I’m proud to have played a part in it.

How does Power Adhesives stay ahead in the industry?

Versatility. Despite our size, we’re agile enough to adapt and meet the needs of both large corporations and smaller businesses. We started as a family business, so we understand the challenges that smaller operations face. Whether it’s competitive pricing or tight lead times, we do whatever it takes to deliver results. Collaboration is key here, everyone works together to achieve the end goal, which keeps us ahead in a competitive market.

How have you seen technology or processes change since you started?

The biggest change has been in line technology. When I started, we had three production lines. Now, we have six! Initially, we specialised in shaped adhesives, which remains our core offering. But with the addition of bulk lines, we’ve expanded into bulk adhesives, opening up new opportunities and markets. Watching this growth and being part of it has been incredible.

Where do you see Power Adhesives heading in the next 5–10 years?

One area that really excites me is the potential growth into other markets, and expanding our footprint as a business. We’re already exporting large amounts globally, and, given the demand and opportunities there are, we’ve often talked about the possibility of expanding further.

Personally, I’d love the chance to be part of any potential expansion of the business! The future is full of possibilities, and I’m excited to see where it takes us.

Keep your eye out for more People of Power Adhesives blogs in the future as we continue our 50 Years of Innovation celebrations.

How do hot melt adhesives work?

Hot melt adhesives are a common tool across a range of industries, offering a powerful and versatile bonding solution. From packaging to construction, professionals everywhere are benefitting from a leading adhesive technology that combines rapid setting times with strong, adjustable bonds. By understanding the science behind these adhesives, manufacturers can leverage their unique properties to enhance productivity and product quality.

The basics of hot melt adhesives

A hot melt adhesive, or hot melt glue, is a type of thermoplastic adhesive that’s applied in a molten state and solidifies upon cooling to form a strong bond between two substrates.

Bringing a second surface into contact with the adhesive begins the bonding process as the molten adhesive wets and interacts with both surfaces. The adhesive rapidly solidifies as it cools, forming a strong bond between the two materials. During this time, compression can be applied to promote even stronger bonds.

What are the key features of hot melt adhesives?

Although there are multiple kinds of adhesives that are used in manufacturing and packaging, hot melt adhesives offer several advantages that set them apart. Compared to epoxies and water-based solutions, these formulations set extremely quickly, reducing idle times and speeding up assembly lines. They can bond with a wide range of substrates, with some suitable for use on heat-sensitive materials like foams and expanded polystyrene.

Hot melt adhesives are also 100% solid content and can be produced in multiple forms, including sticks, slugs, prills and pillows to name a few.

How are hot melt adhesives applied?

After selecting which form of hot melt adhesive you need, you can match the product to a suitable applicator.

Hot melt adhesive applicators – or glue guns – are among the most common application methods. These tools are both simple to use and are available in a wide range of formats to suit given applications. Our Tec applicators can apply hot melt adhesives in bead, dot, and even spray patterns and come in a range of sizes depending on required power and volume. These glue guns offer speed and precise application, making them the default method for many industries.

In fast-paced industrial environments, bulk applicators may be more suitable. These machines are capable of higher output and can operate for long periods with minimal downtime, but are less portable and generally more expensive.

How do hot melt adhesives compare to other solutions?

Compared with other bonding and sealing products, hot-melt adhesives represent a more eco-conscious, safe, and versatile solution. VOC and solvent-free, they present far fewer health risks to operators when compared to solvent-base alternatives.

In terms of production efficiency, hot melt adhesives form final bonds faster than solvent-based adhesives, enabling higher production speeds and faster production times. They do not require a drying or curing step, and have an essentially unlimited shelf life, unlike most other adhesives that can dry out over time. For packaging applications, where tapes and staples may be used for carton closing, hot melt adhesives offer a faster, more cost-effective, and non-destructive sealing solution.

Although investment in heating equipment is necessary, hot melt adhesives are generally less expensive than solvent-based adhesives in the long run due to lower material costs. These formulations also produce minimal waste, further contributing to cost savings.

What are hot melt adhesives and where are they used?

Hot melt adhesives – three short words that contain a lot of intricacy. This technology has revolutionised bonding across multiple industries, with its versatility and performance opening a wide range of applications. Understanding the ins and outs of these powerful adhesives can significantly enhance production processes and product quality.

A Brief History of Hot Melt Adhesives

The exact origins of hot melt adhesives are unclear, dating back to the mid-20th century. Some sources claim that this technology was invented during the 1940s by a man called Paul Cope, an employee at Procter & Gamble, but earlier references to similar products can be found. In the 1950s, the discovery of polypropylene by US chemists Hogan and Banks opened new industrial applications, and in the 1960s hot melt adhesives began to be widely used in the packaging sector.

In terms of adhesive applicators, it wasn’t until 1954 that the item often considered to be the first industrial glue gun was created by George Schultz. However, this design has some significant differences to the technology that is commonly used today, and took repeated iterations by multiple people before what could be called a modern glue applicator was created.

How Do Hot Melt Adhesives Work?

Hot melt adhesives are unlike other adhesive formulations in that they exist as 100% solids at room temperature. These products are designed to be solvent-free and do not contain water. When heated above their melting point, they transform into a liquid, enabling easy application to a surface. The adhesive rapidly solidifies as it cools, generating strong bonds with high cohesion and adhesion.

Building Blocks of Hot Melt Adhesives

Hot melt adhesives are typically composed of three main components: polymers, resins, and waxes. Each of these elements plays a vital role in supporting adhesive performance:

  • Polymers form the backbone of the hot melt adhesive providing cohesion and viscosity.
  • Resins enhance the adhesive’s ability to adhere to surfaces and provide immediate hot tack.
  • Waxes control viscosity and setting speed.

The solid formulation of hot melt adhesives means that compared with solvent-based adhesives, they offer reduced or eliminated VOC emissions. Adhesive formulations can be tailored for specific applications, by adjusting the chemistry of the formulation to achieve the desired properties.

Industries and Applications

Hot melt adhesives have seen widespread adoption across a range of industries. With rapid bonding and setting times, these products can significantly reduce production idle time, and their ability to bond with a wide variety of materials grants them unmatched versatility across multiple applications.

Packaging: Hot melt adhesives are often used for sealing cartons, corrugated boxes, and other packaging materials, with fast setting times making them ideal for high-speed production lines.

Construction and trade: The strong bonds created by hot melt adhesives make them useful for joining surfaces in everything from woodworking and carpentry to precast fabrication.

Industrial and manufacturing: Hot melt adhesives are core to securing materials within composite manufacture and are widely used to fix and protect electrical componentry.

Product assembly: From mattresses to automotive components, hot melt adhesives are commonly used for fast, efficient bonding across a range of consumer goods.

DIY, home, and recreation: The ease of application for hot melt adhesives means they can be easily used for home improvement tasks, repairing sports equipment, and even arts and crafts.

JEC World 2025 proved to be an exciting and insightful event for Power Adhesives, as we showcased our latest innovation, the new and improved Vactac range. The show was extremely busy, with a strong turnout from across the composites industry, reinforcing the growing demand for efficient, reliable, and sustainability led bonding solutions.

Addressing VOC concerns

One of the key themes emerging from conversations at JEC World was the increasing focus on reducing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in adhesive applications. Many visitors to the Power Adhesives stand expressed concerns about the impact of VOCs on employee health and workplace safety.

Prolonged exposure to VOCs has been linked to respiratory issues, skin irritation, and other health risks, making it a pressing issue for manufacturers aiming to create safer working environments. Additionally, with growing regulatory pressures, businesses are being urged to reduce their reliance on solvent-based adhesives that release harmful emissions.

As a result, manufacturers across multiple sectors are actively looking for effective alternatives to traditional adhesives that offer high performance without compromising on worker well-being or regulatory compliance.

Our Vactac range, designed as a high-performance alternative to aerosol adhesives, eliminates VOCs while maintaining exceptional bonding strength. Unlike solvent-based sprays, Vactac provides a sustainability-focused controlled application that enhances efficiency.

Enhancing composite strength

Another recurring discussion our team found themselves having with visitors to the stand centred on the degradation of composite strength caused by certain aerosol adhesives. Several manufacturers raised concerns about how the use of some aerosol technologies can affect resin flow in the infusion process which can result in poor structural integrity once cured.

This is where Vactac stands out, its unique chemistry and application method ensures less degradation/reduced mechanical knockdowns in the laminate once cured. The precision and efficiency of our system captured the interest of a lot of design and manufacturing engineers looking for superior performance in critical applications.

Expanding applications beyond wind and marine

While wind energy and marine industries remain core sectors for composite applications, JEC World highlighted a growing demand for high-quality adhesives across a range of industries, including automotive, rail, aerospace, and construction.

Across this diverse range of industries, we are presented with many interesting and complex challenges which we are keen to work on and create innovative solutions.

Recognising the evolution of Vactac

The Power Adhesives team found it particularly rewarding to meet with distributors and customers who had previously trialled the Vactac system several years ago. Many of them were quick to notice the improvements in adhesive pattern and performance, demonstrating how our ongoing research and development have refined and enhanced the product. Their recognition of Vactac’s evolution reaffirmed our commitment to continuous innovation in composite bonding solutions.

JEC World 2025 reinforced the industry’s movement towards safer, more effective, and sustainability centred adhesive technologies. The enthusiasm and feedback our team received for the Vactac range was overwhelmingly positive, and we are excited to support businesses in transitioning to VOC-free, high-performance bonding solutions.

50 years of innovation at Power Adhesives

For half a century, Power Adhesives has been setting benchmarks in adhesive technology. The company’s world-leading hot melts and applicators are firmly established as leading solutions across a range of markets, supporting customers worldwide to improve efficiency and sustainability with eco-conscious, easy-to-use solutions.

As it celebrates its 50th anniversary, Power Adhesives remains as committed to innovation as ever. This milestone is more than a celebration of its past achievements – it marks a pivotal moment in the company’s goal of driving innovation in the adhesives industry.

50 years of innovation

Although Power Adhesives today is renowned as a leading manufacturer of industrial adhesive solutions, its history did not start this way. Founded in 1974, the company began as an importer and distributor of industrial hot melt glue guns and adhesives. It wasn’t until 1981 that Power Adhesives took its first step into manufacturing, establishing its own plant for adhesive production and creating its own designs for new applicators.

The intervening years have seen the company grow to become a leading supplier for high-performance, reliable adhesive solutions and technology, and this success saw it relocate to a larger production facility in Basildon in early 2005 that could better accommodate new machinery and line extensions. Eight years later, this area was extended again, introducing an additional 12,000 new sq. ft that bolstered its production capacity by 60%.

In 2022, Power Adhesives was purchased by Longacre Group and new CEO Brendan Colgan joined the business. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength and today Power Adhesives’ major brands – Tec and Tecbond – are household names in the adhesive industry.

Applicator products

Power Adhesives offers the largest industrial applicator range on the market. Used around the world in various industrial, professional, and DIY environments, the company’s Tec products are stalwart partners for adhesive applications everywhere.

The 300 series provides a lower-volume applicator solution. Designed for DIY and light industrial applications, the Tec 305 and Tec 308 are lightweight and easy to use, making them perfect for tasks requiring smaller amounts of adhesive.  The 800 series doubles the output of the 300 series to take hot melt bonding to the next level. From the light industrial Tec 806-12 to the heavy-duty Tec 830-12 with an output of 2.5kg/hr, this range provides added efficiency.

For more demanding applications, Power Adhesives has developed its 3000, 6000, and 7000 series applicators, ensuring the company has the ideal solution for its customers whatever their requirements. Built to the highest standards at Power Adhesives’ production facility, the Tec range is a landmark product for the industry that has for decades redefined how hot melts are used.

Adhesives

For more than 40 years of its 50-year history, Power Adhesives has been supplying Tecbond hot melt adhesives to its customers. Designed to provide instant, permanent bonds on a wide range of materials, Tecbond products simplify the adhesive process, paving the way for efficiency in industries including:

  • Packaging and print
  • Construction and trade
  • Industrial and manufacturing
  • Product assembly
  • DIY, home, and recreation

More recently, the company demonstrated its commitment to advancing adhesive technology by launching Tecbond 214B, the world’s first fully certified biodegradable shaped hot melt adhesive. Made with 45% bio-based materials, this formulation breaks down harmlessly post-disposal leaving behind no residues or microplastics. This offers a more sustainable adhesive for hot melt applications that maintains high performance standards.

Using the same data-driven R&D expertise and approach that drove the success of Tecbond 214B, Power Adhesives has also made significant advancements in adhesive solutions for composites manufacturing. This has culminated in the launch of its Vactac advanced solution. Serving as a direct replacement for solvent-based spray adhesives, the Vactac adhesive system offers a more cost-effective and environmentally conscious alternative based on 100% solids, which eliminates VOC emissions and removes the need for special storage conditions when not in use.

Looking ahead

As Power Adhesives enters its sixth decade, it remains focused on advancing hot melt adhesive technology while keeping an eye on the environment. The company plans to expand its Tecbond biodegradable adhesives into bulk systems and will continue to refine existing product lines.
